Bari located close to the Adriatic Sea, Italy is the capital of the province of Bari and of the Apulia region. It is the second economic center of southern Italy and houses a busy port. The town is also known as a university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas of Bari. Over the years Bari has been more popular with visitors coming to the country for business purpose, but that does not mean that the place lacks any historic significance or beautiful land marks. In fact sightseeing in Bari can be a very nice experience if a traveler is aware of the presence of different landmarks of the city.

The Basilica di San Nicola is a marvelous example of Romanesque art which is located in Palazzo Catapanale, in the oldest district of the city. The church is one of the four Palatine churches of Apulia.
The Castello Svevo founded in 1131 is located close to the sacred constructions – the castle is of Byzantine-Norman origin, transmuted by Emperor Frederic II, who strengthened it for security reasons. According to the ancient legends this castle was the home of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Museo della Cattedrale (cathedral’s museum) and the historic center, which is a memorial in itself, with its Colonna della Giustizia, (the column of justice), on which the bankrupts were exposed to the mocking public.
The church of St. Sabinus (the current Duomo of the city) began in Byzantine style in 1034, but was demolished during the sack of the city in1156. The construction of new building started in 1170.
Destroyed in the early 1990s after the severe bombardment, the Petruzzelli theatre had been one of the grandest opera houses in Italy after La Scala in Milan and the San Carlo Theater in Naples. The theater is expected to re-open in 2010.
