Palermo is the administrative center of the region of Sicily in Italy. It is also the capital city of the Palermo province. Palermitani or Panormiti are the terms used to describe the inhabitants of Palermo. Palermo is noted for its architectural heritage and its splendid Norman buildings. A tour to Palermo will have a lot to see and do. This tour to Palermo should include its beautiful churches, buildings and above all, glimpses of its scenic beauty. The most famous church of Palermo has an interesting history behind it. The Cathedral of Palermo was created after a mosque was changed into a church in 1185. San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, Martorana, San Cataldo, Santa Maria della Gangia, Santa Maria della Catena, San Giuseppe dei Teatini, Oratorio di San Lorenzo and Oratorio del Rosario constitute some of the magnificent churches of Palermo.

The Santa Teresa alla Kalsa is derived from an Arab term, which means elected. This church is the best example of Sicilian Baroque, which was constructed in 1686-1706. It consists of a single, airy corridor, with decorations dating back to the early 18th century.

The Santa Maria dello Spasimo church was constructed in 1506 and was then transformed into a hospital. Raphael has painted his famous piece of art, Sicilia's Spasimo to decorate this temple. Palermo has been the birthplace of many a famous author and painter. The city is dotted with architectural splendors of all sorts and sizes. The Palermo International Airport or the Falcone-Borsellino Airport and the Punta Raisi Airport serve the city of Palermo.
