Tourist destinations and attractions do not only mean natural landscapes, great scenic beauty, beautiful mountains, valleys, green grasslands, river flowing between two villages or cities. Tourist attraction does not mean ancient cities, museums, art galleries either. Great architectural creations, historic monuments, religious places are not the only definition of tourist attraction. Tourism and interest of tourists is not at all confined within such limits. Signs of destruction of a place can also be a center of attraction for tourists. Catastrophe and tragedy of a place can also pull huge crowds.
Situated in Italy, Pompeii is one such place that attracts millions of tourists from all corners today for its unthinkable tragedy. Pompeii is an ancient Roman city which was completely ruined by the 'anger' of Mount Vesuvius long back in 79 AD. Pompeii is located near Naples in the Campania.

Before the disaster, Pompeii was a lively city busy with activities.Suddenly everything turned into ashes and was completely destroyed and buried as the catastrophic eruption in Mount Vesuvius continued for two long days. The lively city which was buried deep under thick layer of ashes was accidentally rediscovered in the year 1748 and from then on Pompeii has been attracting tourists in large numbers. The remains that have been dug up by the archaeologists in Pompeii speak about the life of Italian people during Roman empire.
Painfully enough, but it is true that it is the dark history of Pompeii that has turned it into one of the greatest tourist attraction not only in Italy and Europe but of the world. UNESCO has paid tribute the souls of Pompeii by including the city in its list of World Heritage Site. As a result millions of people make tour to Pompeii throughout the year.
According to a recent survey Pompeii attracts around 2.5 million passengers per year. In fact tourism is one of the major contributing sector in the economy of Pompeii. To capitalize on the huge flow of tourists large number of hotels, resorts and restaurants have come up in the region where you could stay and enjoy the typical Italian hospitality while on tour to Pompeii.
